How to Register for WAEC in Nigeria – Complete Step-by-Step Guide
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is one of the most important exams for students in Nigeria and other West African countries. If you are a secondary school student preparing to complete your education, passing WAEC is essential for your academic journey.
This guide explains everything you need to know about the WAEC registration process, including requirements, steps, deadlines, and helpful tips.
What is WAEC?
WAEC stands for West African Examinations Council. It is a regional examination body responsible for conducting the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and The Gambia.
There are two types of WASSCE in Nigeria:
WASSCE for School Candidates (May/June)
WASSCE for Private Candidates (Jan/Feb or Aug/Sept)
This post focuses on WAEC for School Candidates.
WAEC Registration Requirements
To register for WAEC, students must have the following:
Full name (same as on birth certificate)
Date of birth
Valid and recent passport photograph
List of subjects to be taken
School details (for internal candidates)
National Identification Number (NIN) (compulsory as of recent policy)
Payment for registration fee (varies by year and location)
How to Register for WAEC (School Candidates)
If you're in SS3 and attending a registered secondary school, your registration will be done through your school. Here's what the process typically looks like:
Step 1: Enrollment by School
Your school registers with WAEC and submits a list of eligible students. Each student’s details (name, date of birth, subjects, etc.) are entered into the WAEC registration portal.
Step 2: Provide Your Information
You must provide accurate personal details and a clear passport photograph. Mistakes in your name or date of birth can cause problems later when processing your results.
Step 3: Submit Subject Choices
You will select the subjects you intend to write, including:
Core subjects (like Mathematics, English Language, Civic Education)
Elective subjects (based on your field: science, arts, or commercial)
Step 4: Biometric Data Capture
You will be required to do a biometric data capture. This includes fingerprint scanning and passport photo upload. It helps prevent exam malpractice and impersonation.
Step 5: Pay the WAEC Registration Fee
Your school will inform you of the cost. Payment is usually made through the school account, and the fee may include administrative charges.
Step 6: Collect Your Exam Slip
After successful registration, the school will print your WAEC exam slip. This contains your:
Registration number
Exam center
Subject timetable
WAEC Registration for Private Candidates (External)
If you're not in school or want to register on your own, you can apply for the WAEC GCE (Private Candidate). Here's how:
Visit the WAEC registration portal: https://registration.waecdirect.org
Create an account and fill in your bio-data and subject selections
Upload a passport photo and biometric fingerprint
Pay the exam fee online or at a designated bank
Print your photo card and exam timetable
Important Notes
Registration usually starts around December to March for school candidates
Ensure your details are correct to avoid issues with your result
Practice with WAEC past questions and get familiar with the exam format
Avoid exam malpractice – WAEC uses strict security and biometric verification

WAEC is one of the most important examinations in your academic journey. Make sure you register correctly, prepare thoroughly, and stay informed. If you are unsure about any part of the registration, talk to your school or visit the official WAEC website for assistance.
